Rishikesh is a small city of 80,000 that graces the banks of the Ganga River. Devout Hindus consider the Ganga (“Ganges” – as the British said it) to be a holy river. Each year, many Hindu pilgrims visit the river near its source at the Himalayas to bathe in its waters. Hindu ascetics — sadhus — live in ashrams along its banks.
